Subterranean Termite Prevention

A leading cause of structural damage to a residential dwelling is infestation by subterranean termites.  As the name suggests this insect makes its home below grade and forages for food sources at or close to the ground surface.  Left unchecked the colony can be become very large and invasive.  Typically the insect is not visible, as it cannot be exposed to air or light.  There is one exception.  In the spring months the colony will swarm in what looks like a small brown fly.  The only other obvious above grade indicators are mud or tunneling tubes and wood damage.

Prevention

The subterranean termite feeds exclusively on wood and has strict moisture requirements.  Listed below are a few practical ways to help prevent an infestation:

1.      Repair all plumbing, roof or drainage leaks.

2.      Pull earth away from the dwelling and maintain a wood to earth clearance of at least 8 inches.

3.      Remove trash and other debris away from the dwelling.

4.      Keep firewood stacked away from the dwelling.

5.      Properly control and divert roof water away from the dwelling.

6.      Keep gutters clean.

7.      Avoid all wood to earth contact.

8.      Control surface water drainage and maintain a positive grade away from the dwelling.

Subterranean Termite Treatment

Even with proper prevention techniques it is possible for a dwelling to become infested.  If a structure becomes infested addition steps in the form of treatment must be taken.  There are essentially two forms of treatment, liquid termiticides and baiting systems.

Liquid Termiticide Applications

This is the most common form of treatment.  A barrier of liquid pesticide is applied to the soil surrounding the dwelling forming a barrier between the colony and the dwelling.

Subterranean Termite Baits

Bait traps are installed typically every ten feet around the dwelling and monitored for activity.  When activity is noted a toxic bait is installed.

Consult A Professional

Should you need treatment it is best to consult a licensed pest control company to evaluate what treatment is best.  Furthermore the purchase and application of these commercial products is regulated and must be performed by a licensed applicator.
